**Larnaca Apartment Complex Management Calls for Investigation into Alleged Illegal Activities**
The management committee of an apartment complex in Larnaca has formally requested an immediate investigation by relevant authorities following a series of serious allegations. In a statement released on October 2, the committee raised concerns regarding illegal utility connections, unauthorized occupancy of apartments, overcrowding, and threats directed at committee members.
The committee, representing the legal owners of the apartments, expressed alarm over various incidents occurring within the communal and private areas of the complex. Among the allegations, the committee claimed that some apartments were being occupied through forged, invalid, or illegal rental agreements, all without the consent of the rightful owners. Furthermore, it was alleged that third parties were collecting rental income from these properties without authorization.
In addition to concerns about unauthorized occupancy, the committee suggested that there may be indications of money laundering linked to the collection of rent by individuals not entitled to do so. They also pointed to illegal connections to the electricity and water supply, asserting that these connections had been deemed dangerous by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) after inspections.
The committee detailed instances of illegal electricity connections, which they claimed were made either directly to meters or through external wiring between apartments. The allegations extended to illegal water connections, theft of water, and the unauthorized supply or sale of water from one meter to other apartments within the complex.
The situation has reportedly escalated to the point where committee members have faced intimidation and threats. Following the disconnection of illegal utility connections in collaboration with the water board and EAC, the committee alleged that these connections were re-established shortly thereafter. They described instances of individuals shouting at and intimidating residents, contributing to a climate of fear within the community.
In response to these issues, the management committee has already lodged a complaint with the police against specific individuals involved. They have also noted that numerous complaints have been filed by apartment owners regarding these matters.
In an effort to address the structural integrity of the buildings, the committee has partnered with the Larnaca self-government organization (EOA) to appoint a civil engineer. Laboratory tests are being conducted to assess the structural condition of the apartment complex. Additionally, measures have been implemented to protect residents and passers-by from potential hazards, such as falling plaster, with plans for repairs and renovations underway.
The management committee emphasized that the unauthorized use of premises, overcrowding, and interference with communal infrastructure pose significant risks to safety, hygiene, public order, and property protection. They have called upon the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations, enforce laws against illegal activities, and prosecute those exploiting others' properties or engaging in unauthorized utility sales.
The committee has also urged for checks on the legality of the use and occupation of the premises, as well as inspections to remove electrical and plumbing connections that have been tampered with. Their ultimate aim is to ensure the safety, health, and property rights of legal owners and residents are upheld.
Importantly, the management committee clarified that their protest is not directed against any particular national, racial, or religious group. Instead, they stated that their concerns are focused solely on legality, safety, the proper functioning of the apartment complex, and the protection of the rights of legitimate owners and users.
As the situation develops, the management committee remains hopeful that the authorities will take swift action to address these serious allegations and restore order within the apartment complex.
