The two demolitions on Stavrodromiou Street were scheduled for Thursday, June 11 and Friday, June 12, Hadjicharalambous said. They follow the demolition of a property in the Sotiros area of Larnaca at the end of May, where three women had been living, and a second demolition last week of a building whose roof had collapsed in mid-May. Hadjicharalambous said the DLGO would write to the owners of the 35 remaining buildings requiring them to take the necessary measures to eliminate the danger. “If the necessary measures are not taken within a set period, we will proceed with the evacuation of the buildings, a procedure which is followed in such cases,” he said. The 35 buildings are a mix of small and large apartment blocks and residences, located in the municipality of Dromolaxia-Meneou and other communities, though most are in Larnaca, he said. The Larnaca District Court this week formally issued an evacuation order for the apartment block in the Faneromeni area, which had already been vacated following a declaration of danger by the Licensing Director. The DLGO will now proceed to fence off the building and erect additional signage to warn passers-by of the danger, Hadjicharalambous said. The evacuation of the Faneromeni building created significant problems, he said. Forty people living across 24 apartments had to be rehoused and their furniture and household belongings had to be stored. The Ministry of Interior, Civil Defence and the Municipality of Larnaca all provided assistance, but the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare was absent. “We expect greater involvement from the Deputy Ministry in handling similar cases, because these matters must finally be resolved properly,” Hadjicharalambous said. He called for legislation to be amended to allow authorities to act more quickly. “We are waiting for the legislation to be amended so that we can handle such cases immediately, without losing time, and close them as quickly as possible,” he said. “We want to be more practical and resolve whatever problems exist immediately — problems which are not easily resolved under existing legislation,” he added. Hadjicharalambous also noted that current procedures are time-consuming and that the state does not help find housing solutions for people living in dangerous buildings. “There is a social problem because the state does not help find a solution to the housing of persons living in these dangerous buildings,” he said.
