The court set a €1 million surety with creditworthy guarantors as a condition of release. The accused must also surrender his travel documents and report to a police station four times a week. The Permanent Criminal Court is scheduled to hear the case on August 6. In its decision, the court said it considers there to be a visible probability of conviction for the other accused in the case. By contrast, it said the totality of evidence purportedly linking the 54-year-old to the case presents weaknesses. The accused denies any involvement. He was connected to the case through parcels containing suspect materials received by his relatives. He has lived in Cyprus for 40 years and has four children serving in the security forces of the Republic of Cyprus, in the National Guard and the police. His 57-year-old brother was also arrested in connection with the case but no evidence emerged against him. The other two accused in the case, aged 32 and 38, were referred to trial alongside the 54-year-old. They are alleged to be Hamas members who were allegedly preparing terrorist attacks against Israeli targets in Cyprus.
