What happens when artists and communities create together? How is a relationship of trust built? And what responsibilities arise when the experiences, needs and personal stories of a community become part of an artistic process? The “Setting out Together” series opens a space for discussion and exchange around these questions, exploring in practice how art can be created with communities rather than simply for communities. 28 September 2026 | 14:30–16:30 Discovering Common Ground: Values and Ethics in Participatory Arts Practice The first webinar focuses on the values and ethics of participatory art: how we approach a community, how the relationship between artistic, social and human-rights values is shaped, and what it means to treat members of a community as co-creators rather than as “material” for an artistic production. 5 October 2026 | 14:30–16:30 Building on Common Ground: Relationship, Trust and Ownership The second webinar will focus on relationship, trust and ownership in a participatory artistic process. It will explore how artists and communities can build meaningful collaborative relationships, how they share responsibility and ownership of a creative process, and what remains within the community after a project is completed. The webinars will bring together four experienced professionals from the fields of socially engaged art, cultural management and community work: • Kelly Diapouli, Artistic Director of Larnaka 2030, with extensive experience in artistic citizenship and international cultural cooperation. • Klaus Fruchtnis Durán, PhD, artist-researcher and Director of the “Socially Engaged Art” Programme at Fondation Daniel et Nina Carasso, focusing on participatory and social artistic practices and on the relationship between art, place and social transformation. • Lara Matos, social psychologist, with more than 20 years of experience at the intersection of psychology, art and communities, with an emphasis on participation, ethics, relationships and social impact. • Selim Ben Safia, founder and Artistic Director of Al Badil – l’Alternative Culturelle in Tunisia, active in contemporary artistic creation, cultural development and collaboration with local communities in the Mediterranean and the wider MENA region. The webinar series is implemented as part of the project “MedSEA: Socially Engaged Arts in the Mediterranean Area”, which is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme and implemented by Larnaka 2030, in cooperation with the cultural organisations Al Badil – l’Alternative Culturelle from Tunisia, Li.vi.ng from Italy and Busart from Greece. MedSEA aims to support emerging artists from remote areas of the Mediterranean and to strengthen socially engaged art as a field for encounter, exchange and co-creation.
