**Lebanon Seeks Greek Assistance to Enforce Agreement with Israel**
*Athens, Greece - August 31, 2026* - Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has formally requested assistance from Greece in enforcing a recent framework agreement with Israel, aimed at ceasing hostilities and addressing ongoing tensions in the region. This appeal was made during a meeting with Greek President Constantine Tassoulas in Athens on Monday.
The framework agreement, brokered by the United States, was signed by Lebanon and Israel in late June. It outlines key provisions, including the disarmament of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the region. However, the implementation of this agreement has faced significant challenges, particularly due to Hezbollah's rejection of the deal unless Israel first withdraws from Lebanese territory.
In his meeting with Tassoulas, Aoun emphasized the need for Greek support, stating, "We request Greece’s assistance as much as possible to help Lebanon." He highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that Lebanon is committed to upholding its side of the agreement while facing ongoing military actions from Israel, which have resulted in substantial casualties and destruction in Lebanon.
Since March, Israeli military operations have reportedly killed over 4,300 individuals in Lebanon, injured more than 12,000, and led to the destruction of approximately 60 to 70 villages. Aoun warned against resolving the conflict through military means, asserting that "solving the problem by military force will not succeed." He reiterated that the framework agreement requires mutual implementation from both sides to be effective.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who attended the press conference alongside Aoun, expressed Greece's support for Lebanon's sovereignty and independence. He affirmed Greece's commitment to contributing to efforts aimed at de-escalation and fostering mutual understanding between Lebanon and Israel.
The request for Greek assistance comes on the heels of a multibillion-dollar arms deal announced between Greece and Israel earlier in the day, further underscoring the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region.
The situation remains tense, with Hezbollah continuing to reject the framework agreement while Israel has escalated its military actions in southern Lebanon. The two countries recently concluded a seventh round of US-mediated negotiations, with the next round scheduled for September.
