Middle East conflictLebanon, Israel, US discussing boundaries of ‘pilot zones’ in southern Lebanon The project of the zones was proposed by the US during the fourth round of talks in Washington on June 2 and 3BEIRUT, June 25. /TASS/. Military delegations from the United States, Lebanon, and Israel are discussing, during talks in Washington, the geographical boundaries of "pilot zones" in southern Lebanon that are currently under Israeli occupation, the office of the Lebanese president said. "A trilateral meeting between military delegations was held in Washington on Wednesday as part of the ongoing fifth round of talks," it wrote on X. "The meeting yielded progress on the issue of the establishment of ‘pilot zones’ which will come under the control of the Lebanese army after the withdrawal of Israeli troops from those areas." It also said that the sides are currently discussing the "geographical boundaries of the zones and the mechanism for the implementation of the agreements reached." The "pilot zone" project was proposed by the United States during the fourth round of talks in Washington on June 2 and 3. Under the project, the Lebanese military will be expected to demonstrate its ability to maintain control of the situation and counter any potential incursions by the Shiite organization Hezbollah, whose fighters are required to completely withdraw from the territory south of the Litani River. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said earlier that the negotiators in Washington are sparing no effort to consolidate the ceasefire, which is to be followed by the withdrawal of Israeli troops and the deployment of the Lebanese army. This, in his words, will make it possible to begin the process of post-war reconstruction.
