**Leftist Leader Elif Eralp Promises Change as Berlin's New Mayor**
Elif Eralp, the leader of the Left Party, has emerged as a prominent candidate to become the next mayor of Berlin following a significant electoral victory. In a press conference on Monday, Eralp emphasized her commitment to addressing the city's escalating housing crisis, particularly the issue of unaffordable rents that have plagued many residents.
Eralp's party achieved its best results in Berlin's local elections, surpassing Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative party and positioning itself to potentially lead a coalition government for the first time. "Berlin has clearly voted in favour of a change in policy, for an affordable Berlin where everyone can live with dignity, regardless of income or background," she stated, highlighting her intention to tackle the ongoing rent crisis.
One of Eralp's key proposals includes the expropriation of over 200,000 housing units from corporate landlords, a move she believes is necessary to alleviate the city's housing shortage. "As a woman, I’m reluctant to compare myself to a man. But naturally Mamdani’s success was a big example for us," she acknowledged, expressing her admiration for the message his victory sent globally.

She faces mounting pressure to address allegations of antisemitism within parts of her party, particularly in relation to criticisms of Israel. Merz has condemned the rise in antisemitism as a "disgrace for Germany," calling for decisive actions to combat such incidents in Berlin.

"It is absolutely clear to me that the glorification of violence and terrorism is completely unacceptable," she affirmed during her news conference, reiterating her commitment to fostering a safe environment for all citizens.
As coalition discussions loom, potential partners such as the centre-left Social Democrats and the environmental Greens have signaled their readiness to negotiate a governing alliance. However, both parties have insisted that Eralp must first address the antisemitism allegations that have been associated with some local branches of the Left Party.
