**Let’s Do It! Cyprus Calls for Volunteers for Islandwide Cleanup Week**
Cyprus is gearing up for its annual Let’s Do It! Cyprus clean-up campaign, inviting thousands of volunteers to participate from October 26 to November 1. This initiative, organized by Together Cyprus, aims to unite various segments of society, including schools, businesses, organizations, local authorities, and informal groups, in a collective effort to clean up the island.
Volunteers are encouraged to select their preferred locations for clean-up activities, which can take place in diverse settings such as beaches, parks, forests, fields, and neighborhoods. Registration for the event is currently open, with a deadline set for October 15 at noon. Early registration is particularly recommended for teams wishing to receive cleaning materials provided by the campaign.
The mascot for this year’s campaign, Mr. Papou, a fig tree, will make a return. Organizers have stated that Mr. Papou symbolizes resilience, adaptability, and the Cypriot identity, while also emphasizing the critical need to protect the environment.
Since its inception in Cyprus, Let’s Do It! has mobilized over 350,000 volunteers, including students, teachers, businesses, and community members. The campaign is part of the broader international Let’s Do It! World movement, which has engaged more than 139 million people across over 200 countries and regions since 2012. Cyprus has gained international recognition for its environmental initiatives, with local activities featured in the World Cleanup Day Impact exhibition.
While the main campaign is scheduled for one week, organizers have indicated that environmental activities and clean-up efforts will continue throughout the year. The upcoming campaign is being held under the auspices of the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, with the Ministry of Agriculture serving as the main sponsor. Other sponsors include Hellenic Tzilalis as the gold sponsor, as well as Petrolina, Gap Akis Express, and Mr. Bin. Support for the campaign also comes from McDonald’s Cyprus and Cyta, with media sponsorship provided by the Cyprus News Agency and the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.
Organizers are urging residents to form teams, choose their clean-up locations, and actively participate in this year’s campaign. They emphasize that environmental responsibility begins with individual actions and collective efforts can lead to significant positive change for the environment.
As the campaign approaches, the call for volunteers reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues and the importance of community involvement in addressing them. The Let’s Do It! Cyprus initiative not only aims to clean up the island but also seeks to foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship among its participants.
