**Letymbiotis Expresses ‘Deep Sadness’ Over Kyrenia Ferry Deaths**
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis conveyed profound sorrow on Sunday regarding the tragic sinking of a passenger ferry off the coast of Kyrenia, which has resulted in the confirmed deaths of seven individuals. In a statement, Letymbiotis expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and those affected by the incident, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
“Our thoughts are with those who lost their lives, with the injured, with all those experiencing this tragedy, and with their families, in these extremely difficult times,” Letymbiotis stated. He underscored the Republic of Cyprus’ commitment to assisting in the ongoing search and rescue operations, affirming that all necessary resources would be made available.
The ferry capsized shortly after departing from the new port of Kyrenia around 12:10 PM, en route to the Turkish port of Tasucu. Onboard were a total of 267 individuals, comprising 259 passengers and eight crew members. As rescue operations unfolded, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman reported that, as of 4:30 PM, seven fatalities had been confirmed, while 237 individuals had been successfully brought ashore. Efforts to locate the remaining 23 individuals who are still unaccounted for are ongoing.
In response to the tragedy, Larnaca’s joint rescue coordination centre (JRCC) has expressed its readiness to support the search-and-rescue efforts initiated in the northern region following the ferry's capsizing. The JRCC has reached out to the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (Unficyp) to facilitate communication with the Turkish Cypriot authorities, indicating the Republic of Cyprus’ willingness to provide assistance, particularly with aeronautical search and rescue assets if necessary.
President Nikos Christodoulides has instructed his chief negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, to engage in discussions with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman to clarify the Republic of Cyprus’ readiness to extend all possible assistance during this critical time. A government official reiterated the commitment, stating, “When human lives are in danger, we contribute with every available means. The Republic of Cyprus has the means, the operational capability, and, above all, the readiness to assist immediately.”
As the search and rescue operations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of those still missing and providing support to the families affected by this devastating incident.
