**Limassol Cleans Up 25,000 Tonnes of Waste Over Two Years**
Limassol, Cyprus – The municipality of Limassol has reported a significant achievement in waste management, with its hygiene service collecting a record total of 24,700 tonnes of waste materials over the past two years. This initiative, which includes various types of waste such as pruning debris, tyres, abandoned vehicles, and other bulky items, underscores the municipality's commitment to maintaining cleanliness and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the municipality highlighted its efforts to mark World Cleanup Day, celebrated on September 20. The municipality emphasized that its primary goals include protecting public health and improving the living environment for the community.
From 2024 to 2025, the hygiene service undertook extensive cleanup operations, successfully clearing 5,482 tonnes of waste from vacant plots, 6,328 tonnes of mixed materials, and 2,975 tonnes of bulky items. Additionally, the service removed 2,369 tonnes of waste during road cleaning activities and collected 2,734 tonnes of pruning waste. Smaller quantities of tyres and discarded wood were also included in the overall waste management efforts.
The municipality's technical department contributed to the cleanup by providing 4,805 tonnes of mixed waste, further supporting the hygiene service's operations. Over the two-year period, the service cleared waste from a total of 1,300 plots in 2024-2025 and an additional 1,733 plots to date in 2025.
In an effort to engage the community, the municipality conducted special cleanup campaigns from April to July of this year. These initiatives resulted in the collection of over 104 tonnes of waste from 12 different areas in Limassol, which included 56 tonnes of bulky waste.
One of the significant challenges faced by the municipality has been the issue of abandoned vehicles. To address this, the municipality issued notices to vehicle owners, leading to the removal of over 1,800 vehicles and other objects. For those who did not comply, the municipality took action and removed 545 abandoned vehicles and items.
The Limassol municipality remains steadfast in its commitment to creating a "clean and green city." Plans for future targeted campaigns are already in the works, as the municipality aims to sustain its cleanup efforts. Officials are encouraging residents to participate actively in maintaining cleanliness by refraining from dumping waste in public or private spaces and reporting areas that require attention.
As Limassol continues to prioritize waste management and environmental cleanliness, the municipality's achievements over the past two years serve as a testament to its dedication to public health and community well-being. The ongoing efforts reflect a broader commitment to fostering a sustainable and livable environment for all residents.
