Investigators are examining 12 offences against the pair, including conspiracy, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, malicious damage and various traffic offences. The 19-year-old driver was also found to have been driving under the influence of drugs. The circumstances in which the chase of the white van began have already come to light, but new details presented to the court by the CID Limassol investigator have drawn particular attention. According to the remand application, the 19-year-old’s dangerous driving at various points across the city saw him hit both parked and stationary vehicles, causing four traffic accidents during the chase. Police fired warning shots while trying to stop the vehicle. At one point on Omonoias Avenue, the driver crossed the central reservation, entered the oncoming lane and turned right, with the chase continuing towards the Agios Spyridonas area. Both suspects threw objects from the vehicle at officers to try to stop them from being intercepted, including tools, a car speaker and a car battery. They also threw a crab, which struck the windscreen of a patrol car and caused damage. During the chase, the 19-year-old attempted to ram members of the Z Team, the police force’s tactical response unit, as well as patrol cars, with the vehicle. At one point, while the van was stopped, a Z Team officer chasing it tried to reach in through the driver’s window to immobilise the vehicle. The 19-year-old struck him and then drove off, dragging the officer for several metres and injuring him. The van was eventually stopped at the traffic lights in the Monagroulli Industrial Area. A search of the 19-year-old turned up a black knife, after which the 20-year-old passenger was also arrested. Both suspects were taken to Limassol Police Directorate for drug testing. Before the sample was taken, the 19-year-old told police he had taken crystal. The test itself came back positive for amphetamines. The 19-year-old had previously been arrested on July 9 over a similar incident involving a Z Team member, in which he struck an officer with his vehicle to evade arrest.
