Residents report repeated incidents of attacks on and killings of pets and stray animals, as well as the dogs entering private properties, and say that despite appeals and reports to the competent authorities, no effective solution has been found to date. Yiota, a Kapileio resident and active animal welfare volunteer, said the problem has continued for around seven months without an effective solution being found. Speaking to philenews, she said she has repeatedly written to all the services and authorities involved, seeking their immediate intervention, as, she said, the situation is worsening daily. She said residents of the affected communities, particularly the elderly, now live in a state of fear and insecurity. “Their souls tremble at the thought of leaving their homes,” she said. “For seven months we have been facing an extremely dangerous situation with a pack of around ten large dogs, which start out from Korfi and move aggressively towards the surrounding villages,” she said. She explained that she initially began receiving calls from residents of neighbouring communities asking for help, as, they reported, the dogs had attacked and killed cats and other animals. “People know I deal with animals, so they contact me. They told me there were dogs that killed their pets. At first I was just trying to gather information, but the situation started to spread and the dogs kept moving further afield,” she said. According to Yiota, wherever the pack passed, incidents of animals being killed were recorded, while residents who tried to protect their property or drive the dogs away faced aggressive behaviour from the animals. “They move as a pack, and that makes them even more dangerous. As we speak, these dogs are still roaming daily and people are afraid. We’re talking about people aged 80 and 90 who call me and tell me they can’t leave their homes,” she said. She added that residents are trying to help by filing complaints themselves, but that the situation remains out of control. She said the situation has reached breaking point, saying “we can no longer sleep at night,” while, she said, the competent authorities have not yet taken substantive action. “The animals tear apart whatever they find, and the situation continues without effective intervention,” she said. She said that despite repeated letters and phone complaints, local and state authorities keep passing responsibility to one another, with the result, she said, that the issue remains without a substantive response. Yiota said she has sent a new letter, which she also shared with philenews, describing the situation as “an extremely serious and ongoing public safety and animal welfare issue.” The letter states that the problem remains unresolved despite repeated complaints, reports and appeals to the competent authorities. It notes that the letter is co-signed by more than twenty residents of the affected communities.
