The situation had calmed by early Sunday morning after police cordoned off parts of the city centre. Hesse state premier Boris Rhein condemned the violence, saying he was shocked by the events and that those responsible would face consequences. Violence was also reported in Cologne, where police used water cannon to disperse crowds, and in Berlin, where protesters attacked officers with bottles and pyrotechnics.
