An 82-year-old retired craftsman from north-central France was involved in a shooting incident with police on Saturday after he declared that a revolution was underway and insisted that President Emmanuel Macron had been deposed. The event unfolded in Nogent-le-Rotrou, prompting a significant response from law enforcement.
The situation began when the man's wife contacted the police, expressing concern that her husband had armed himself with a hunting rifle and had gone into their garden. She reported that he was convinced the French government had collapsed.
Upon arrival, a team of five gendarmes encountered the elderly man, who reportedly proclaimed, “It’s a revolution” and “Macron has been deposed.” He then opened fire, injuring two police officers in the legs. The gendarmes, guided by one of the man’s daughters, located him hiding behind a cedar tree.
In response to the gunfire, the officers first ensured the safety of the daughter before attempting to negotiate with the man. Despite their efforts, he discharged his weapon three times, resulting in the injuries of the two gendarmes. Following the shooting, the man retreated into the basement of the property.
Both injured officers were subsequently taken to hospitals for treatment. One was transported to Chartres hospital, while the other was taken to the Percy military hospital in Clamart. Fortunately, both gendarmes survived their injuries, and their lives were not deemed to be in danger.
The standoff concluded late in the evening when negotiators from France’s elite GIGN police tactical unit successfully persuaded the octogenarian to surrender shortly before 11 PM local time. Following his arrest, he was taken to the hospital for surgery due to a bullet lodged in his hand.
The retired craftsman, who has no prior criminal record, was placed in custody after the incident. Prosecutors indicated that he has not yet been formally questioned due to his hospitalization and what they described as “verbal delirium” during the confrontation. A psychiatric evaluation is anticipated to assess his mental state at the time of the shooting.
