**Major US Supplier Recalls Jalapenos Amid Salmonella Outbreak**
A significant recall of jalapeno products has been initiated by Taylor Farms, a prominent US produce supplier, following a Salmonella outbreak linked to the products. The recall affects items distributed to various grocery store and restaurant chains, as confirmed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The jalapenos in question were sourced from the Mexican state of Sinaloa and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. Retailers including Hannaford, Kroger, Stop & Shop, Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and Whole Foods have received the recalled products, which span across 26 states. The FDA is currently conducting an investigation into the outbreak to determine the extent of the contamination and its sources.
As of mid-June, health authorities reported that at least 345 individuals have contracted Salmonella, with numerous hospitalizations noted. Salmonella infections are typically caused by consuming food contaminated with the bacteria, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are at a higher risk of experiencing severe complications from the infection.
This recall is not the first food safety issue for Taylor Farms. Last month, the company also withdrew shredded iceberg lettuce from the US market after it was identified as the source of a separate outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic intestinal illness. Health officials traced this outbreak back to individuals who had dined at Taco Bell locations across multiple states. Since May, this cyclosporiasis outbreak has affected at least 6,358 people in 15 states, resulting in 278 hospitalizations and two reported deaths. Health experts caution that the actual number of infections may be higher, as many individuals recover without seeking medical attention or being tested for Cyclospora.
Cyclosporiasis can lead to prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, bloating, gas, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue.
In addition to the recent recalls, Taylor Farms was also implicated in a 2024 E. coli outbreak linked to yellow onions served in McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, raising concerns about the company's food safety practices.
As investigations continue, consumers are advised to stay informed about the recalled products and to exercise caution when handling and consuming produce. The FDA and health officials are working diligently to address the outbreaks and ensure food safety for the public.
