**Malaria Outbreak at Frankfurt Airport Claims Two Lives**
Frankfurt, Germany - A rare malaria outbreak at Frankfurt Airport has resulted in the deaths of two employees, raising concerns about the transmission of the disease in non-endemic regions. The outbreak, which began in early July, is believed to have been triggered by infected mosquitoes that were inadvertently brought to Germany by air travel from a malaria-endemic country.
According to the Frankfurt Public Health Department, the first confirmed case of malaria was reported shortly after the outbreak began. The worker’s diagnosis was confirmed posthumously, prompting immediate investigations by health authorities. The airport operator, Fraport, responded by setting mosquito traps around the facility, capturing several specimens for genetic analysis to ascertain their origin.
In mid-July, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany’s federal disease-control agency, reported four confirmed cases among airport employees. The RKI noted that the affected individuals fell ill between July 4 and July 6, 2026, and indicated that the infections were likely transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes that had been imported via air travel.
Local media later reported that the number of infected workers had risen to six, with most of them employed in roles related to luggage handling. On Wednesday, health authorities confirmed the second death linked to the outbreak, although they emphasized that the overall risk to the general population remains extremely low.
"The disease is not transmissible from person to person but is always transmitted by mosquitoes," stated Frankfurt health authorities in a communication to local media. They did not specify the total number of confirmed cases but assured the public that those affected were receiving appropriate medical treatment.
Peter Tinnemann, the health chief of Frankfurt, sought to reassure residents, telling the DPA news agency that "the risk to the Frankfurt population is insignificant." He reiterated that the outbreak is being closely monitored and that preventive measures are in place to mitigate any further risk.
Malaria is a serious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are spread through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Symptoms can include fever, chills, headaches, and fatigue, with severe cases potentially leading to organ failure, seizures, and coma. The most dangerous form, known as malaria tropica, can become life-threatening within 24 hours if not treated promptly. Despite its severity, malaria is generally preventable and treatable with early intervention.
Globally, malaria remains a significant health issue, particularly in tropical regions. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported approximately 610,000 malaria-related deaths worldwide in 2024, with the majority occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Niger accounted for over half of these fatalities.
In Germany, malaria cases typically involve travelers who contract the disease while visiting endemic regions. However, instances of "airport malaria," where infected mosquitoes are transported into the country and subsequently bite individuals at the airport or on aircraft, have been documented. The last known case of airport-acquired malaria in Europe also occurred at Frankfurt Airport in 2023, according to the RKI.
As authorities continue to investigate the outbreak and monitor the health of airport employees, they are also urging vigilance among the public. Travelers returning from malaria-endemic areas are advised to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and to seek medical attention if they exhibit symptoms consistent with malaria.
