**Man Accused of Murdering Student Referred to Criminal Court**
A man accused of murdering 22-year-old Bangladeshi student Shahruar Ahmed Emon has been referred to the Larnaca permanent criminal court, where his trial is set to begin on September 24. The defendant faces a total of seven charges, including premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, abduction, and unlawful deprivation of liberty with intent to cause grievous harm, among others.
The alleged offences took place in the Larnaca district in June. According to evidence presented to the court, the accused met Emon on June 7 during a bus ride, where they exchanged contact details. The suspect reportedly believed that Emon came from a wealthy family, which may have influenced his subsequent actions.
On June 9, just two days after their initial meeting, the accused is said to have purchased a knife. The following day, he contacted Emon, claiming to have found him a job that would pay €50 per day. Later that evening, Emon traveled to the Kofinou area to meet the suspect.
Investigators are currently scrutinizing a series of statements made by the accused regarding the events that led to Emon's death. The victim's body was discovered in an open area in Kofinou, where police also recovered a knife believed to be connected to the murder. A post-mortem examination revealed that Emon suffered three stab wounds to the shoulder blade area and one wound to the left side of the neck.
Further complicating the case, police reported that when the suspect was arrested, he possessed personal belongings belonging to Emon, including boarding passes and a bank card with the student's name. Authorities are also looking into claims that the suspect made demands for money from Emon's family, allegedly contacting the victim's father to request a ransom for his son’s release.
As the trial approaches, the prosecution is expected to present detailed evidence and witness statements to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting issues related to student safety and crime in the region.
The accused remains in custody as the legal proceedings continue, and the court is set to convene later this month to begin the trial process.
