Paphos, Cyprus – A 28-year-old man was apprehended on Thursday following a dramatic chase involving a stolen vehicle that ended in a crash and an altercation with police. The incident unfolded in the Paphos district, with authorities confirming the arrest on Friday.
The vehicle in question was reported stolen at approximately 3 PM on Thursday, shortly after it was taken from a parking area in Paphos around midday. Police quickly initiated a search for the stolen car and successfully located it being driven through a village in the district.
Upon spotting the vehicle, officers signaled for the driver to pull over. However, the suspect allegedly refused to comply and instead accelerated away from the scene. The pursuit escalated as he drove dangerously along the Polis Chrysochous-Paphos road, endangering other road users.
The situation intensified when the suspect collided with another private vehicle during the chase. Despite the crash, he continued to evade capture until he ultimately lost control of the stolen car, crashing into a roadside safety barrier. Following the crash, the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was confronted by responding officers.
In a further escalation, the suspect allegedly assaulted one of the police officers during the attempt to escape. Officers managed to overpower him and took him into custody around 3:20 PM. During the pursuit, police were compelled to fire a warning shot into the air in an effort to halt the suspect's reckless driving.
A preliminary drug test conducted on the arrested individual returned positive results, indicating possible substance use, while an alcohol test showed no signs of intoxication. Following the arrest, the 28-year-old was formally charged under a court warrant and remains in custody as investigations continue.
The Paphos Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Stroumbi police station are actively pursuing further inquiries into the incident, aiming to gather more information and assess the full circumstances surrounding the theft and subsequent chase.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding vehicle theft and public safety on the roads in Cyprus. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
