The operation was ultimately completed through the unit’s successful intervention, after negotiations to persuade him to come out failed to produce a result. According to Police, the man is a third-country national for whom a compulsory hospitalisation order at the Athalassa psychiatric hospital had been issued. The order was reportedly obtained from the court following a request from his relatives. Police received information yesterday afternoon that the 31-year-old was inside his home holding a knife, displaying aggressive behaviour and refusing to speak with anyone. An MMAD unit was called and rushed to the scene to disarm the man and carry out the court’s hospitalisation order. The 31-year-old refused to cooperate with the unit’s members and locked himself in a room in the house while still holding the knife. The arrival of a specialist Police negotiator at the scene also failed to produce a result, so in the evening it was decided that MMAD members would take action to neutralise the risk to the home’s other occupants. Members of the special force managed to enter the house and disarm the 31-year-old before he could take any action. He was then transferred to Nicosia to carry out the court’s compulsory hospitalisation order.
