The man was arrested last March and referred directly for trial before the Permanent Criminal Court of Larnaca. The court has set October 12 as the date the trial will begin. Until then, the 36-year-old will remain in custody. The 36-year-old faces eleven charges relating to abduction with intent to confine, abduction with intent to cause actual bodily harm, threatening violence, assault causing actual bodily harm, psychological abuse, carrying a knife and unlawful entry. The incident caused major disruption in a Larnaca neighbourhood on the afternoon of March 25, unfolding in front of dozens of residents. The man came out onto a balcony holding a knife and, according to witness accounts, threatened the two women with it. Police were alerted by a member of the public at around 3:30pm and went on alert. Larnaca CID officers arrived first and cordoned off the area, while negotiators were called in from Nicosia along with members of the Special Anti-Terrorist Squad. The man continued shouting and threatening the women, and at one point allegedly held the knife to the throat of one woman, who was lying on the ground. Negotiators persuaded the man to release one woman, after which the second was also rescued. He was then handcuffed. The two women were taken to Larnaca Hospital with minor injuries and in a state of shock; after receiving first aid, they were discharged.
