**Man Arrested After Wife Killed with Power Tool in Yerolakkos**
A tragic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Yerolakkos, where a woman was killed following an alleged attack by her husband during a domestic dispute. This incident marks the second femicide reported in the occupied northern region of Cyprus within a span of five days.
According to reports from Turkish Cypriot media, the couple was driving along the Morphou to Nicosia Road when a verbal argument escalated. The situation intensified as the vehicle veered off the road, traveling approximately 110 meters into a nearby field. It was there that the husband reportedly struck his 35-year-old wife on the head with an electric cutting tool that was inside the car, leading to her death.
Following the incident, law enforcement apprehended the husband, who provided a statement admitting to the assault. He confessed to physically assaulting his wife with both his hands and the power tool. Authorities have requested his detention to facilitate further investigation and a post-mortem examination, with both the prosecution and defense agreeing to the request.
This incident follows another femicide that occurred just days earlier, on Monday, in the village of Ayios Georgios in Karpasia. In that case, a 61-year-old woman was fatally stabbed by her 71-year-old ex-husband outside her residence. After the attack, the suspect attempted to take his own life and is currently hospitalized under police supervision.
The recent spate of violence against women has sparked significant outrage and concern among community leaders and activists. Mehmet Harmanci, the mayor of Turkish Cypriot Nicosia, expressed his dismay, stating, “another woman was murdered in front of the eyes of the politicians responsible for the security of this country.”
In response to the escalating violence, opposition leader Sila Usar Incirli emphasized the need for systemic change, declaring, “we are determined to change this system.” The women’s support association, Kayad, has reiterated its calls for the introduction of a domestic violence bill to address the growing concerns surrounding the safety and protection of women in the region.
