**Man Jailed for 10 Years for Cannabis Supply in Paphos**
Paphos, Cyprus – A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to a decade in prison after being convicted of possessing cannabis with intent to supply. The ruling was delivered by the Paphos criminal court on Monday, following a series of events that unfolded earlier this year.
The case began when officers from the police drugs squad, known as Ykan, stopped the defendant's vehicle on a road in Paphos. According to police reports, the car was involved in a collision with two official police vehicles before coming to a halt. This incident prompted the officers to conduct a search of the vehicle.
During the search, authorities discovered a travel bag containing approximately 10.041 kilograms of cannabis. In addition to the cannabis, officers found around half a gram of a substance believed to be cocaine. The investigation did not end there; further searches at premises managed by the defendant, as well as his home, led to the discovery of an additional 2.509 kilograms of cannabis. In total, police seized around 12.5 kilograms of cannabis during the investigation.
In addition to the drug charges, the court also imposed a three-year sentence for negligent driving. However, the judge ordered that both sentences run concurrently, meaning the defendant will serve a total of 10 years in prison.
The case highlights ongoing issues related to drug possession and distribution in Cyprus, as authorities continue to crack down on illegal drug activities. The collaboration between the Ykan and the Paphos traffic police was instrumental in the investigation, leading to the defendant's arrest and subsequent conviction.
As drug-related offenses remain a concern in the region, this case serves as a reminder of the legal consequences associated with drug trafficking and possession. The Paphos court's decision reflects the seriousness with which such offenses are treated under Cypriot law.
