**Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Attempted Murder and Rape in Famagusta**
A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison following his conviction for the attempted murder and rape of a 26-year-old woman in a hotel in the Famagusta district. The violent incident occurred in the early hours of August 31, 2024, after the two individuals met at a nightclub.
The Famagusta Criminal Court delivered its sentence, which includes a 15-year term for attempted murder and a concurrent 12-year term for rape. As a result, the man will serve a total of 15 years in prison. In addition to these charges, he was also found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm.
During the trial, the court heard that after leaving the nightclub, the defendant and the victim went to the hotel where the woman was staying. Evidence presented during the proceedings indicated that the defendant launched a brutal attack on the victim, striking her repeatedly until she lost consciousness. The court determined that the severity of the assault demonstrated a clear intention to kill.
Following the attack, the defendant raped the victim while she was unconscious and subsequently left her in the hotel room, believing she was dead. Emergency services were called, and the victim was transported to the hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit for 48 hours. After her condition stabilized, she remained hospitalized for several additional days before being discharged.
The trial concluded on July 30, 2026, with the court's verdict heavily relying on the victim's testimony, which was deemed credible by the judges. This testimony was further supported by forensic evidence, DNA analysis, independent witness accounts, and CCTV footage. The defendant's version of events was found to be unreliable and was rejected by the court.
In determining the length of the sentence, the judges emphasized the serious nature of the crimes, noting that they violated fundamental rights, including the right to life and sexual autonomy. The court underscored the need for a severe and deterrent sentence, particularly given the prolonged and repeated violence inflicted upon the victim.
The judges also pointed out the particularly egregious nature of the crime, highlighting that the defendant had raped the victim while she was unconscious and subsequently abandoned her, believing she had died.
As part of the sentencing, the time the defendant has already spent in custody since September 11, 2024, will be deducted from his overall sentence.
