**Man Jailed for 23kg Cannabis Haul**
A 28-year-old Greek Cypriot man has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for possessing a substantial quantity of cannabis with the intent to supply. The ruling was made by the Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) court on Wednesday, following his arrest in December during a coordinated operation involving the SBA police and the Cyprus police drug squad.
The arrest took place in Trachoni, where law enforcement officials stopped the man’s vehicle as part of a targeted raid. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered 23 kilograms of cannabis, along with 250 grams of a substance believed to be cocaine and 26 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine.
The severity of the crime and the amount of drugs involved led to a significant legal response. The court's decision reflects the ongoing efforts of local authorities to combat drug trafficking and its associated harms to communities. Following the sentencing, the man was transferred to Dhekelia prison to serve his sentence.
SBA police superintendent Melina Papagregoriou commented on the case, emphasizing the detrimental impact of drug trafficking on society. She reaffirmed the commitment of the authorities to address drug-related crimes, stating that they would continue to pursue those involved in such activities with a strong and uncompromising approach.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling drug-related offenses in the region, as well as the serious legal consequences for individuals found guilty of such crimes. The collaboration between the SBA police and the Cyprus police drug squad illustrates a unified front in addressing the issue of drug trafficking and ensuring community safety.
