**Man Remanded Over €6,800 Online Banking Scam**
A 28-year-old man has been remanded for five days by the Paphos District Court in connection with an ongoing investigation into an online banking fraud case. The court's decision came on Sunday, following the man's arrest at Larnaca Airport while he was attempting to leave Cyprus.
The case originated in February when a 49-year-old man reported to the police that he had fallen victim to a scam. The victim received a phone call on his mobile device, which displayed the name of the online bank where he held an account. The caller, posing as a bank representative, informed him that there were attempts to gain unauthorized access to his bank account.
Under the pretense of providing assistance, the caller requested the victim's personal banking credentials. Trusting the legitimacy of the call, the 49-year-old complied and shared his sensitive information. It was only later that he discovered a significant sum of money—over €6,800—had been withdrawn from two of his bank accounts.
Following the report, law enforcement agencies launched an investigation and were able to secure an arrest warrant for the suspect. The man was apprehended at the airport on Saturday, highlighting the swift action taken by the police in response to the fraud case.
The investigation into the scam continues as authorities work to uncover further details and potentially identify any accomplices involved in the fraudulent activities. The case serves as a reminder of the increasing prevalence of online banking scams and the importance of safeguarding personal financial information.
