**Maresca Defends VAR Amid Controversy Following Manchester Derby Victory**
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca expressed his discontent with the ongoing debate surrounding the VAR decision that led to Erling Haaland's winning goal in the recent Manchester derby, a match that City won 1-0 despite being reduced to ten men. The victory marked Maresca's first derby win as City’s manager, but the controversy over the officiating has overshadowed the team's performance.
The decisive moment in the match occurred when Haaland's goal, initially ruled offside, was awarded following a VAR review that determined the Norwegian striker was onside. However, the refereeing body, Pro Ref, later acknowledged that the VAR decision was incorrect, adding fuel to the ongoing discussions regarding officiating standards in football.
Maresca emphasized that the focus should not solely be on the VAR incident, especially given that his team played with a numerical disadvantage for a significant portion of the match after Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute for a foul on Bruno Fernandes. "To talk about one moment after that game when we played for 70, 75 minutes with 10 players is quite poor. I think the performance was unbelievable, and I’m pleased," he stated during a press conference ahead of the League Cup third-round tie against Norwich City.
The City manager also reflected on a similar situation from a previous derby in January 2023, where a controversial goal awarded to Manchester United, despite Marcus Rashford being in an offside position, left City awaiting an apology from the officiating body. "Three years ago when I was here, it happened the exact same against Manchester United. The goal was not a regular goal, and no one apologised. We are still waiting for the apology for that," Maresca noted, highlighting the frustrations that can arise from perceived inconsistencies in officiating.
In his defense of the VAR officials, Maresca acknowledged the challenges they face in making quick decisions under pressure. "Sometimes, they go for you, the decisions, sometimes, they go against you," he said. "But also it’s not easy, I think, for the VAR, for the people that are in front of the screen, and in 10 seconds, 20 seconds they have to make a decision. It’s not easy for them. Sometimes, they make some mistakes. I make mistakes; players make mistakes; I think it’s part of our job."
As Manchester City prepares for their upcoming match against Norwich City, Maresca's comments serve as a reminder of the complexities surrounding officiating in football, particularly in high-stakes matches like the Manchester derby. The manager's focus remains on his team's performance, hoping to build on their recent success while navigating the challenges that come with the scrutiny of VAR and officiating decisions.
