**Massive Flash Flood in Nepal Sweeps Away Villages and Bridges**
A devastating flash flood struck northern Nepal on Wednesday, causing significant destruction in the mountainous region bordering Tibet. The flood, which occurred around 9 AM local time, primarily affected the Syapru Besi and Timure areas in Rasuwa district, leading to the loss of entire villages and critical infrastructure.
Authorities have confirmed at least eight fatalities, with numerous individuals, including more than 50 security and police personnel, reported missing. The full extent of the damage and the number of casualties remain unclear as rescue efforts are underway.
The floodwaters surged through the Bhote Koshi River, which originates in Tibet. Initial reports suggest that the surge may have been triggered by a glacial lake bursting or a cloudburst in the region. Eyewitness accounts and videos shared online depict the violent nature of the flood, with buildings and bridges being swept away and the riverbanks submerged, leaving residents with little time to react.
Rasuwa district administrator Narendra Pariyar expressed concern about the situation, stating, "We have reports of villages and infrastructure project sites being washed away. There could be heavy casualties or loss of property. But I cannot say for sure now." The flood has caused significant damage to hydropower projects, roads, and bridges, disrupting vital connections to the China border.
In response to the emergency, Nepalese officials have issued warnings to residents living along riverbanks in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan districts, urging them to seek higher ground immediately. The Nepal Army, along with the Armed Police Force and Nepal Police, have been deployed to assist in rescue operations, with two helicopters being utilized for aerial support.
Prime Minister Balen Shah has convened a meeting to discuss the government's response to the flooding and coordinate rescue efforts. The Nepalese government is on high alert as the flood surge continues downstream, with the Bhote Koshi River draining into the Trishuli River, which eventually flows into India as the Gandak River.
This incident follows a pattern of severe flooding in the region, as neighboring countries like China and India have also experienced heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding this year.
