According to the newspaper’s exclusive information, the former Cyprus problem negotiator, who reached the runoff of the 2023 presidential election with AKEL’s backing and posted a notable share of the vote, is currently consulting with a team of associates as he weighs the political landscape. Sources say Mavroyiannis intends to approach this election differently to 2023. If he decides to run, that decision will be his own, independent of any party process, and he will announce his candidacy by setting out his own political platform to Cypriot voters. As he has said repeatedly in public, he wants AKEL’s support, along with that of other progressive forces willing to back him. Mavroyiannis and AKEL have maintained good relations since their close cooperation in the 2023 race, a bond sources say was reinforced when he publicly backed AKEL during the parliamentary elections, boosting his standing among the party’s supporters. Lunch with Stefanos AKEL general secretary Stefanos Stefanou revealed in a recent television appearance that he and Mavroyiannis had lunch together. Stefanou described it as a meeting in keeping with their good relationship, covering the Cyprus problem and current affairs generally rather than focusing solely on the presidential race. AKEL has its own internal process for choosing a candidate, which has not yet reached its final stage. Stefanou has said the party expects to complete that process and reach a decision by March 2027, earlier than in previous election cycles. However, if Mavroyiannis announces his candidacy by the end of this year, AKEL’s own decision would follow his announcement. That does not mean AKEL is bound by his move, but it would, in practice, significantly narrow AKEL’s options. Polling momentum A key factor in the equation, sources say, is the momentum some polls suggest a Mavroyiannis candidacy would carry, something Mavroyiannis and his team are said to be weighing alongside the broader political landscape. Combined, these could prove decisive in his final decision. Mavroyiannis has said publicly that his interest in running is real, and sources say the odds of him announcing a candidacy are considerably higher than the odds he does not. A fragmented right Another factor shaping the race is the fragmented state of Cyprus’s right-wing political scene. President Nikos Christodoulides’s candidacy is widely considered a given, despite no official announcement, as is a candidacy from DISY, whether that turns out to be Annita Demetriou, Averof Neofytou or someone else. Much remains unclear, however, about how both the Christodoulides camp and DISY will ultimately position themselves. Uncertainty also surrounds smaller parties such as DIPA, the Ecologists and EDEK, the latter now under new leadership and facing a different set of circumstances. Stefanou, in his recent television appearance and in earlier interviews, has said he intends to open a dialogue with parties currently outside parliament, as part of building an alliance aimed at what he calls progressive change.
