Nicosia, Cyprus – In the early hours of Monday, three separate incidents involving minor fires in bins and tyres were reported at schools in the Nicosia district. These incidents occurred as police heightened their presence in anticipation of the new school year, aiming to deter vandalism and unauthorized gatherings at educational institutions.
Police spokesman Vyron Vyronos informed the Cyprus News Agency that officers were on heightened alert throughout the night as part of a nationwide operation. This initiative was specifically designed to prevent the kind of damage and disturbances that have been recorded during previous school years, particularly involving final year students who traditionally celebrate the night before school starts.
The operation was initiated following a meeting at the Ministry of Education, where officials developed an action plan to address the issues of vandalism and unauthorized parties at schools. Vyronos noted that despite the three fire incidents, the night passed relatively smoothly overall, with only minor problems reported.
“Everything else went smoothly,” Vyronos stated. “In some cases, we had fires in bins and some tyres at schools, but there were only three incidents. No similar cases were reported elsewhere in Cyprus.”
The police’s proactive approach included increased patrols and periodic checks at various schools throughout the Nicosia district. These measures were part of a broader effort to ensure safety and security as students prepare to return to classes.
As of Monday, police reported that their operations were effective, with a noticeable reduction in incidents of deliberate damage compared to previous years. “So far, we have nothing to announce,” Vyronos added, indicating that the situation remained stable after the initial incidents.
