**Title: Morocco Foils Islamic State-Linked Attacks with Arrests of Ten Suspects**
Moroccan authorities have successfully thwarted a series of planned attacks linked to the Islamic State (IS) by arresting ten suspected members of a terrorist cell. The arrests were made on Monday during coordinated operations across several cities, including Agadir, Taroudant, Casablanca, El Hajeb, Tetouan, Fqih Ben Salah, and Safi, as reported by the Central Bureau for Judicial Investigations (BCIJ).
The BCIJ stated that the suspects were connected to IS affiliates operating in the Sahel region and were in the process of preparing attacks aimed at destabilizing public order within Morocco. The agency emphasized that the group had received direct support and guidance from the Islamic State's branch in the Sahel, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by extremist factions in the region.
During the raids, security forces confiscated a substantial cache of materials that included weapons, chemicals, bomb-making equipment, knives, military-style uniforms, and extremist literature containing detailed instructions for assembling explosive devices. Additionally, investigators recovered two recordings featuring pledges of allegiance to IS, as well as digital equipment that may have been used for planning or communication purposes.
A significant discovery was made during a search of a warehouse in Inezgane, where authorities found a vehicle modified to run on butane gas. The BCIJ indicated that this vehicle was intended for use in a suicide bombing or ramming attack targeting sensitive locations and facilities within the country.
These arrests come amid increasing concerns from the international community regarding the expansion of extremist activities beyond their traditional strongholds in the Sahel, particularly in countries such as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. The UN Security Council and various security analysts have issued warnings about the growing influence of groups like the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the IS Sahel branch, which have been responsible for numerous attacks on both military and civilian targets in the region.
In recent years, Morocco has been vigilant in addressing the threat posed by IS and its affiliates. Habboub Cherkaoui, the country’s counterterrorism chief, noted last month that over 130 Moroccans have been recruited by IS branches in Africa. The North African nation has experienced several IS-linked incidents, including a notable attack in 2023 in Casablanca, where suspected militants killed a Moroccan policeman.
The BCIJ has been proactive in dismantling terrorist cells; in February 2025, the agency reported the disbandment of a 12-member group loyal to IS that was plotting attacks on both national and foreign targets. Furthermore, in July 2025, four suspected extremists were arrested in northern Morocco, specifically between the cities of Tetouan and Chefchaouen.
Morocco's ongoing efforts to combat terrorism reflect a broader commitment to maintaining national security and public safety in the face of evolving threats from extremist groups. The recent arrests underscore the importance of vigilance and coordination among security forces to prevent potential attacks and protect citizens from the dangers posed by radical ideologies.
