The Municipality continues daily mosquito-control operations, including on weekends. The Municipality is using approved treatments to target areas where breeding sites have been identified or where residents have complained, according to a municipal announcement. Intensive control work is under way along the Klimos, Katevas and Kotsirka river channels, as well as at grates in enclosed sections of the rivers where hotspots have been found. Crews are also treating storm-water drains and other points where standing water tends to collect. Particular focus has been placed on the Engomi area. Work has also taken place along the Klimos river, from the Lakatamia boundary to Agios Dometios, near the cemetery and the State Fair area, and along the open channel running alongside Iroon Street. Separately, crews have carried out work and inspections at grates on the Klimos pedestrian path and in the area around 28th October Avenue. The Municipality said its services systematically check known potential mosquito breeding sites. These include homes with abandoned swimming pools, lift shafts in buildings under construction, open channels and other points where standing water can collect. All complaints submitted by residents are being investigated, the Municipality said. “When investigating each complaint, the relevant services do not limit themselves only to the home or location that was reported, but also proceed, on their own initiative, to inspect neighbouring properties, with the aim of identifying potential breeding sites.” Because of this pattern, the Municipality said, residents’ help is essential. It is calling on every household to systematically check their home, yard and outdoor areas, and to remove any possible source of standing water. The Municipality is urging particular attention to buckets and other containers, plant-pot saucers, pet and bird water bowls, small ponds, abandoned swimming pools, gutters and any other object or spot that can hold water, even in small amounts. Breeding sites can even form in buildings under construction, where water becomes trapped in lift shafts. Mosquito control, the Municipality added, is a matter of public health, hygiene and quality of life, and requires everyone’s cooperation.
