The collision happened at around 3:15am before the Agios Silas exit, Limassol Traffic Police chief Marios Charalambous told reporters at the scene. Demetris Vassiliou struck the back of a minibus being driven ahead of him by a 57-year-old man, he said. The motorcyclist was seriously injured in the crash and taken by ambulance to Limassol General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced him dead, police said. He was wearing a helmet and protective clothing on the upper part of his body at the time, but this was not enough to save him. The minibus driver was given alcohol and drug tests, both of which came back negative, according to police.Initial examinations at the scene found no signs of braking, Charalambous said. Asked whether the minibus had been travelling slowly or the motorcyclist had been speeding, he said there were no specific indications at this stage and that all possibilities were being examined as part of the investigation. Asked about a recent spate of fatal accidents involving motorcyclists, particularly those riding large-displacement bikes, Charalambous said motorcyclists were especially vulnerable road users. He urged all drivers to exercise caution and observe the Road Traffic Code, noting that excessive speed was often a contributing factor in such crashes. The investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash is continuing, Limassol Traffic Police said.
