**Mountain Community Allowances Increased to Combat Inflation**

The Cabinet of Cyprus has approved an increase in financial allowances for residents of mountain communities, a decision aimed at alleviating the impact of inflation on these areas. The revised scheme, which will run through 2026, sees the budget raised from €9 million to approximately €10.4 million, as announced by the Interior Ministry on Thursday.

This adjustment is expected to benefit around 10,500 households, translating to approximately 24,000 individuals living in mountainous regions of Cyprus. The increase in allowances is part of broader measures introduced by the government to mitigate inflationary pressures affecting various sectors of the economy.

The new allowance structure delineates different tiers based on the altitude of the communities. Residents living in areas situated between 600 and 800 meters above sea level will see their monthly allowance rise from €175 to €225. Those in communities located between 801 and 1,000 meters will experience an increase from €225 to €275. Furthermore, for residents of communities that are situated above 1,000 meters, the allowance will now be €310, up from the previous €260.

In addition to these base allowances, the scheme also provides extra financial support for each member of a household, whether they are pensioners or non-pensioners. This additional support will increase from €165 to €200 per person.

The Interior Ministry clarified that the application period for this scheme has already closed, meaning that no new applications will be accepted at this time. However, individuals who have previously applied and meet the eligibility criteria will automatically receive the increased allowances without needing to take any further action.

This initiative reflects the government's commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in mountainous regions, where the cost of living can be particularly challenging. By enhancing financial support, the Cabinet aims to improve the quality of life for residents in these areas, ensuring they can better cope with rising living costs.

As inflation continues to pose challenges across the economy, the government's proactive measures, including this allowance increase, are designed to provide much-needed relief to those most affected. The decision is part of a wider strategy to address economic pressures and support communities that may struggle to maintain their livelihoods in the current financial climate.

Overall, the increase in allowances for mountain community residents is a significant step towards fostering economic stability and social welfare in Cyprus's more remote areas.
