**National Guard Remains Cyprus’ Primary Deterrent, Says Defence Minister**
In a significant ceremony held on Tuesday, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas reaffirmed the vital role of the National Guard as Cyprus' primary deterrent against external threats. Addressing the swearing-in ceremony for the new non-commissioned officers (NCOs) of the Class of 2026 at the Stylianos Kalbourtzis camp in Delikipos, Palmas emphasized the National Guard's longstanding commitment to safeguarding the nation's freedom and democracy.
Palmas highlighted that the National Guard has served Cyprus for over six decades, playing a crucial role in maintaining the country's security. He pointed out that the ongoing Turkish occupation of a significant portion of Cyprus for 52 years adds a unique weight to the responsibilities carried by the National Guard. "In a homeland where a large part remains under Turkish occupation, the sense of responsibility and duty carries particular weight," he stated.
The Defence Minister underscored that the mission of the National Guard to defend the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus is "steady and non-negotiable." He welcomed the new NCOs into this mission, marking their official entry into a role that is central to the National Guard's operations.
Palmas noted that the recruitment of new permanent NCOs is a critical step in both strengthening and modernizing the National Guard. This initiative aims to enhance the operational and administrative capabilities of the military, especially in light of increasingly complex security challenges facing the region.
Describing NCOs as one of the cornerstones of modern military operations, Palmas elaborated on their essential functions. He stated that NCOs are pivotal in the day-to-day operations of military units, tactical decision-making, and the training and mentoring of younger personnel. He urged the new recruits to uphold high standards of discipline, adhere to military regulations, and foster mutual respect within their ranks.
"Leadership is reflected not only in rank and responsibilities, but above all in behaviour, leading by example and the way you make use of the people who serve alongside you," Palmas emphasized, highlighting the importance of exemplary conduct in military leadership.
The Defence Minister also encouraged the new NCOs to remain humble and continuously seek knowledge and professional development. Quoting the ancient Greek orator Isocrates, he advised them to "be content with what you have, but always seek something better," reinforcing the idea of lifelong learning and growth within the military.
In a gesture of appreciation, Palmas paid tribute to the families of the graduates, acknowledging their support as instrumental in helping the new NCOs reach this significant milestone in their military careers.
The ceremony not only marked the formal induction of the new NCOs into the National Guard but also served as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to the security and sovereignty of Cyprus. As the nation navigates complex geopolitical challenges, the National Guard continues to stand as a key pillar of defense and stability in the region.
