NATO has reaffirmed its commitment to defending its allies in light of recent reports suggesting that Iran is contemplating attacks on United States military targets in Europe. The alliance's readiness comes as Bulgaria enhances security measures at the Bezmer Air Base, which has been designated as a refueling station for US military operations.
A NATO official stated, "NATO is prepared to address any threat and will always do what is necessary to defend all Allies." This declaration follows a Financial Times article that indicated Iran's potential plans to target US military installations across Europe, raising concerns particularly in southeastern European nations that host such facilities.
In a demonstration of its defensive capabilities, NATO reported that it intercepted four ballistic missiles launched by Iran towards Turkiye earlier this year. This incident was highlighted as evidence of NATO's effective deterrence posture against external threats.
The situation has prompted Bulgaria's government to take significant precautionary measures. In July, the Bulgarian parliament approved the use of the Bezmer Air Base for US military operations, allowing approximately 250 US personnel to be stationed there until October. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev emphasized that Bulgaria is implementing extensive security measures at the base, coordinated with the Ministry of Defence. He noted that these measures are in response to a perceived threat level that exceeds current assessments by security services.
In a diplomatic response to Bulgaria's cooperation with the US, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi contacted his Bulgarian counterpart to convey a warning. He stated that any nation involved in military actions against Iran would bear responsibility for the consequences of such actions, as reported by Iran's Tasnim News Agency.
The geopolitical landscape remains tense, particularly following the outbreak of hostilities between the US and Iran earlier this year.
