**Title: NATO Troops Injured in Friendly Fire Training Incident in Latvia**
Four Italian soldiers were injured in a friendly fire incident during a NATO live-fire exercise in Latvia late on Friday. The occurrence took place at the Adazi training area, where Italian forces are stationed as part of NATO's military presence on the eastern flank of the alliance.
According to the Italian Defense Ministry, the incident involved a soldier operating a non-automated weapon mounted on a military vehicle who accidentally discharged fire towards another armored vehicle. Reports indicate that a burst from a 7.62mm machine gun, mounted on a Dardo infantry fighting vehicle, struck another Dardo that was traveling in front of it, reportedly while its rear hatch was open.
The four injured servicemen, all members of Italy’s 11th Bersaglieri Regiment, were promptly transported to a hospital in Riga for treatment. While one soldier sustained more serious injuries, he is currently reported to be in stable condition. Fortunately, none of the injured are believed to be in life-threatening situations. Military investigators are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the friendly fire incident to determine how it occurred.
Approximately 300 Italian troops are currently stationed at Camp Adazi as part of NATO’s multinational force in Latvia. This deployment is part of a broader effort by NATO to reinforce its eastern flank and conduct live-fire drills in proximity to Russia and Belarus, which NATO officials describe as defensive measures.
The frequency of military exercises in the Baltic region has raised concerns over safety, as there have been several serious accidents in recent years. Notably, in March 2025, four US soldiers lost their lives when their recovery vehicle sank into a peat bog during a training exercise in Lithuania, close to the border with Belarus. Additionally, a Belgian soldier died from injuries sustained during a live-fire exercise at the same training ground in November of that year. In another incident, Norwegian troops narrowly escaped injury when live rounds were fired at targets while they were advancing through nearby woodland.
The increasing military activity in the region has drawn criticism from Russia, which has accused NATO and its European members of escalating tensions and militarizing the continent. During the recent BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Western governments are fabricating a 'Russian threat' to divert attention from domestic issues.
As investigations into the friendly fire incident continue, NATO remains focused on its commitment to collective defense and the safety of its personnel during training exercises.
