**Nearly 90,000 Told to Evacuate as Wildfire Approaches Reno, Nevada**
Reno, Nevada – A large wildfire threatening the outskirts of Reno has prompted urgent evacuation orders for tens of thousands of residents. As of Sunday evening, approximately 42,000 individuals have been instructed to leave their homes immediately, while an additional 45,000 have been advised to prepare for potential evacuation.
The wildfire, which was first reported on Saturday morning at 11:15 local time, has already burned around 10,500 acres and remains 0% contained. Local officials have indicated that the fire was human-caused, though further details regarding the specific cause have not been disclosed. The unpredictable and windy weather conditions have exacerbated the fire's spread, posing significant challenges for firefighting efforts.
In response to the escalating situation, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County. He has also activated the National Guard to assist with firefighting and law enforcement operations. "This is an active and rapidly evolving situation, and I urge everyone in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the direction of local officials," Governor Lombardo stated.
The wildfire has resulted in injuries to six individuals, three of whom are emergency responders engaged in firefighting efforts. Local emergency services have reported that around 13,700 homes are situated within the evacuation zone. To accommodate displaced residents, two emergency shelters have been established.
In light of the situation, all schools in Washoe County will be closed on Monday, with the exception of one institution. Mass road closures are also in effect as authorities work to manage the crisis and ensure public safety.
Reno, located in western Nevada near the California border, has a population of approximately 280,000. The community is currently facing significant challenges as residents respond to the evacuation orders and the ongoing threat posed by the wildfire.
Local officials continue to monitor the situation closely and are urging residents to stay informed through official channels. As firefighting efforts continue, the focus remains on safeguarding lives and property in the affected areas.
