**Nepal and China Resume Flood Rescue Efforts as Death Toll Approaches 600**
Rescue operations are underway in the flood-affected regions along the Nepal-Tibet border following a brief suspension due to concerns over a potential second glacial flood. The disaster, which has already claimed a significant number of lives, continues to evolve as rescuers work tirelessly to locate missing individuals.
As of August 29, 2026, Nepal's disaster management authorities have reported at least 579 fatalities, with an alarming 1,924 people still unaccounted for. In Tibet, Chinese officials have confirmed five deaths and reported that 558 individuals are missing. The catastrophic events began on Wednesday morning when a glacier collapsed at an elevation of approximately 5,200 meters in the Himalayas. The collapse sent a massive surge of ice, rock, and debris plummeting about 1,200 meters before crashing into the Lende River. This sudden influx of material caused the river to swell dramatically, raising the Trishuli River by nine meters in just half an hour.
Initially, the US Geological Survey suggested that an earthquake may have triggered the disaster; however, they later revised their assessment, attributing the seismic signals to the landslide itself. The aftermath of the collapse has led to the formation of a new lake at the site, which has raised concerns about the stability of the barrier holding back the water. Alton Byers, a glacial-hazards scientist at the University of Colorado Boulder, has expressed concerns regarding the lake's stability, indicating that it is composed of loose debris that is not securely in place.
Due to these risks, search and rescue operations were temporarily halted until the situation could be assessed. Fortunately, authorities have since deemed the risks manageable, allowing rescue teams to resume their critical work. Byers noted that the safest outcome would involve a natural drainage of the lake, although he also mentioned that Chinese crews might attempt to lower the lake's water levels manually using hand tools, a method previously employed in other areas susceptible to glacial lake outburst floods.
In response to the crisis, Chinese Premier Li Qiang visited the disaster zone in Gyirong, emphasizing the need for a scientifically formulated search-and-rescue strategy. Chinese President Xi Jinping has also convened meetings to ensure that officials are prepared to strengthen monitoring of glacial lakes in the affected areas.
International assistance has begun to flow into the region, with aid coming from various countries and organizations, including India, the United Nations, the Red Cross Federation, Australia, South Korea, and the United States. However, officials have cautioned that the death toll is likely to rise further as rescuers reach remote areas that remain isolated due to mudslides and washed-out roads.
