**New Animal Shelter and Water Management Initiatives Discussed in Paphos Meeting**
PAPHOS – A meeting held on Friday between Environment Commissioner Elias Myrianthos and Charalambos Pittokopitis, president of the Paphos District Self-Government Organisation (EOA), focused on critical issues concerning environmental protection, water resource management, and infrastructure development in the Paphos district.
One of the key topics discussed was the establishment of a new animal shelter in the area. Pittokopitis expressed the EOA's commitment to facilitating the necessary permits for the shelter's construction, emphasizing the organization’s readiness to provide “every possible facility” to ensure the project moves forward. This initiative aims to address the growing need for animal welfare services in the district.
In addition to the animal shelter, the meeting also addressed pressing concerns regarding the sewage system and biological unit in Achelia. The officials discussed the importance of effective management of these systems to enhance the overall environmental health of the region.
Another significant point of discussion was the desalination plant located in Polis Chrysochous. Pittokopitis highlighted the urgency of accelerating the procedures necessary for the installation and operation of the plant. He also sought the commissioner’s support in securing government funding for the development of a rainwater management network in the area.
Pittokopitis noted that the approval for the commencement of a sewage system in Polis Chrysochous had already been granted. He proposed that the EOA should combine the sewage project with the construction of the rainwater management network. This approach aims to avoid the inefficiency of digging up roads multiple times for different projects, which he described as “absurd.” By implementing both projects concurrently, the EOA hopes to reduce costs, minimize disruption for residents, and streamline the overall infrastructure development process.
The Paphos road and highway authority is currently seeking the necessary funding to enable the simultaneous implementation of these two vital projects. The collaboration between the EOA and the authority is seen as a crucial step toward improving basic infrastructure in the region.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to ongoing cooperation and communication between the Paphos EOA and the Environment Commissioner’s office. Both parties expressed their determination to work together to enhance the environmental and infrastructural landscape of the Paphos district, ensuring that the needs of the community are met effectively.
As discussions continue, the focus remains on balancing development with environmental sustainability, a challenge that is becoming increasingly important in the face of climate change and urbanization. The establishment of the new animal shelter and improvements to water management systems are seen as essential steps in addressing these challenges in Paphos.
