**New Digital Platform Enhances Sustainability Education in Cyprus Schools**
The Ministry of Education in Cyprus has introduced a new digital learning platform aimed at enhancing primary school students' understanding of sustainable development. The platform, named Digital ESD (Digital Education for Sustainable Development), is specifically designed for teachers and pupils aged nine to eleven, providing a range of interactive resources that address global environmental, social, and economic issues.
The initiative is part of a broader European effort to promote digital education in sustainability, funded by the Erasmus+ program with a budget of €400,000 over three years. The project brings together educational partners from several countries, including Germany, Norway, Hungary, Ukraine, and Cyprus, with the Cypriot education ministry taking a leading role in the implementation.
The Digital ESD platform features 19 distinct 'learning worlds' that align with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each module is equipped with a comprehensive teacher’s guide, a student workbook filled with activities, and interactive animated stories designed to engage young learners. This multifaceted approach aims to foster not only knowledge but also critical thinking and responsible attitudes towards sustainability among students.
While the primary focus is on primary education, the resources available on the platform can be adapted for older students and utilized by non-formal education providers and organizations that promote sustainable development. This flexibility ensures that a wider audience can benefit from the educational materials, regardless of their prior knowledge of sustainability topics.
The platform is accessible in both Greek and English, making it inclusive for a diverse range of students and educators across Cyprus. The Ministry of Education emphasizes that the resources are available free of charge, removing financial barriers to accessing quality educational materials on sustainability.
The launch of the Digital ESD platform marks a significant step in integrating sustainability education into the Cypriot school curriculum. By equipping young learners with the tools to understand and address pressing global challenges, the initiative aims to cultivate a generation that is informed and proactive in promoting sustainable practices.
As Cyprus continues to align its educational framework with international sustainability goals, the Digital ESD platform serves as a vital resource for teachers and students alike, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and social responsibility in the classroom and beyond.
