**New Ebola Variant Linked to Unknown Animal Source – Study**
Scientists have identified a new variant of the Ebola-causing Bundibugyo virus responsible for the outbreak in 2026 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and Uganda, according to a study published in *Nature Medicine* on Monday. This finding raises concerns about the emergence of new strains and the potential for future outbreaks.
The Bundibugyo strain is not entirely new; previous variants have caused outbreaks in Uganda from 2007 to 2008 and in the DR Congo in 2012. However, the current strain circulating in 2026 is notable for its origin. Researchers determined that it emerged from a new transmission from an unidentified animal source to humans, rather than being a re-emergence of previously known strains.
The study's conclusions were drawn from an analysis of 22 viral genomes collected from infected individuals in both the DR Congo and Uganda. These genomes formed a distinct genetic cluster, separate from those linked to earlier outbreaks, indicating a novel transmission pathway.
In light of these findings, the researchers emphasized the need for enhanced local diagnostic capabilities and expanded genomic surveillance. Such measures are crucial for the early detection of future outbreaks, which could mitigate the spread of the virus and improve public health responses.
The Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) belongs to the same family of viruses as the more widely recognized Zaire ebolavirus, which is known for causing severe forms of Ebola disease. The virus is typically carried by fruit bats and can be transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or bodily fluids from infected individuals. Symptoms associated with the Bundibugyo strain include fever, severe headaches, muscle and body pain, weakness, fatigue, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and loss of appetite.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has described the current outbreak as the largest Ebola epidemic recorded in the DR Congo, surpassing the previous significant outbreak that occurred between 2018 and 2020. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concerns last week, noting that the disease is spreading more rapidly than the efforts to contain it.
As of August 10, the outbreak had affected 53 health zones across five provinces in the DR Congo, with Ituri province identified as the main epicenter. The country’s Health Ministry reported a total of 4,449 confirmed cases and 2,061 deaths, resulting in a fatality rate of 46.3%.
In contrast, neighboring Uganda has recently declared itself Ebola-free after managing to contain the virus. The country recorded 20 cases, with 15 of those being imported from the DR Congo. The outbreak in Uganda resulted in two deaths, while 18 individuals recovered.
The emergence of a new variant of the Bundibugyo virus underscores the ongoing challenges posed by Ebola and the importance of continued vigilance and preparedness in public health systems to address potential outbreaks. The identification of an unknown animal source also highlights the need for further research into the ecology of the virus and its transmission dynamics.
