**New Protaras Roundabout Opens to Ease Traffic**
Protaras, Cyprus – A new roundabout was officially inaugurated on Friday by Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, marking a significant development aimed at enhancing road safety and improving traffic flow in the bustling tourist area of Protaras. The roundabout, located at the junction of Protaras-Cape Greco Avenue and Thali Street, is expected to address the growing traffic demands in the region, which is frequented by residents, workers, and a large number of tourists.
During the inauguration, Minister Vafeades emphasized the government's commitment to upgrading Cyprus' road infrastructure as a means to support economic development and improve the quality of life for citizens. "For the government, the continuous upgrading of the road network is a constant priority," he stated. He further highlighted that a well-functioning road network not only facilitates economic activities and tourism but also enhances the daily lives of the community.
The new roundabout is strategically positioned in the Paralimni-Deryneia area of Famagusta, a region known for its vibrant commercial activity and influx of visitors, especially during the summer months. Vafeades noted that the roundabout has already demonstrated its effectiveness during the recent Kataklysmos holiday, where it played a crucial role in alleviating congestion despite the heavy traffic.
In addition to improving traffic flow, the project includes several enhancements aimed at increasing safety for all road users. These improvements encompass new pavements, a dedicated cycle lane, a pedestrian crossing equipped with signals, upgraded street lighting, and better road signage. Vafeades pointed out that road safety considerations extend beyond just motorists, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and families who frequent the area.
Mayor of Paralimni-Deryneia, Giorgos Nikolettos, expressed his optimism regarding the impact of the new roundabout, describing it as a modest yet significant project for the municipality. He noted that the roundabout has effectively resolved a long-standing traffic issue in the heart of Protaras, leading to improved traffic management and safety, particularly during peak tourist seasons. "It has decongested traffic and has contributed decisively to better and safer traffic management," Nikolettos remarked.
The contract for the roundabout's construction was signed in November of the previous year, with the total cost amounting to €596,000 plus VAT. The project reflects the local government's efforts to enhance infrastructure in response to the increasing demands posed by a growing population and tourism sector.
