**Nicosia Welcomes Multilingual Short Film Festival**
Nicosia is set to host a vibrant multilingual short film festival titled "Languages on Screen – Europe Speaks Cinema," taking place from September 22 to 24. This festival coincides with the European Day of Languages and aims to showcase the diversity of European cinema through a selection of short films from ten different countries.
Organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation in collaboration with the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, the Centre for Social Innovation, and the Film Festival on Diversity, the event promises to be a cultural highlight for the city. The festival will feature a total of 15 films, each telling unique stories through the lens of various languages, emphasizing the theme of shared narratives across cultures.
The festival kicks off on September 22 at 6:30 PM at the EU House on Byron Avenue. The opening night will present four short films from Spain, France, Italy, and Ireland. Notable selections include "Céntrico," directed by Luso Martínez, which explores contemporary issues of housing and tourism through a seemingly haunted apartment in Madrid. The evening will also feature "Les Mystérieuses aventures de Claude Conseil," a comedy by Marie-Lola Terver and Paul Jousselin, "Tempi Supplementari," a poignant tale of a father and son by Matteo Memè, and "Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom," an Irish-language comedy by Daniel O’Hara that delves into themes of language, identity, and belonging. While admission is free, attendees are required to register for the opening night.
The following evening, the festival will move to Eleftheria Square’s open-air amphitheatre, showcasing stories from Poland, Italy, Finland, Greece, and France. This night will feature five films, including "Education" by Emi Buchwald, the multilingual "Purgatory" by Bianca Bertini, "Astro TV" by Magdaleena Jakkila, "Incidentally" by Konstantinos Oikonomou, and "Montsouris" by Guil Sela.
The festival will conclude on September 24 at the Gardens of the Future, where six additional films will be screened. This final evening will include "9BED(s)" by Ismini Daskaroli, "Sky Like Silk. Full of Oranges" by Betina Kuntzsch, "Carpinchos" by Alfredo Soderguit, "Pană de vulpe," a political satire by Vlad Popa, "My Guide" by Barnabás Tóth, and "Tumbas vecinas" by José Antonio Gutiérrez Bustos, which promises warmth and humor.
All films will be screened with English subtitles, making the festival accessible to a broader audience. The initiative aims to foster appreciation for linguistic diversity and promote intercultural dialogue through the medium of film.
