In a coordinated effort to enhance public safety and prevent crime, police across Cyprus conducted overnight operations on Sunday, resulting in the arrest of nine individuals. The operations, which took place in urban areas nationwide, were part of ongoing crime prevention and policing campaigns aimed at maintaining public order.

Authorities reported that the arrests stemmed from a variety of offences. Among those detained were individuals charged with illegal residency in the Republic of Cyprus, dangerous and reckless driving, possession of burglary tools, and suspected stolen property. Other charges included drug possession, illegal possession of property and tobacco products, causing a disturbance, breach of the peace, and assaulting a police officer.

The police operations involved extensive checks, with officers stopping and inspecting a total of 596 drivers and 144 passengers. Additionally, 51 premises were inspected as part of the initiative to combat criminal activities. These checks led to two reports of offences.

Traffic enforcement was a significant component of the operation, with officers issuing 370 citations for various road traffic violations. Among these violations, 122 were related to speeding. The police also impounded 19 vehicles during the enforcement checks.

In an effort to address issues related to impaired driving, officers conducted 100 alcohol tests, resulting in five reports for drink-driving. Furthermore, preliminary roadside drug tests indicated that five drivers tested positive for drug use.

The police's proactive approach reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents and visitors in Cyprus. The operations are part of a broader strategy to deter criminal activity and foster a sense of safety within communities.

Authorities have not disclosed the identities of those arrested or the specific locations targeted during the operation, but they emphasized the importance of such initiatives in maintaining law and order. The police continue to encourage public cooperation and vigilance as they work to uphold safety standards across the island.

As investigations into the various offences continue, the police remain dedicated to their mission of preventing crime and addressing public safety concerns in Cyprus.
