**Nineteen Remain in Hospital After Kyrenia Ferry Accident**
Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus - A tragic incident unfolded off the coast of Kyrenia on Sunday when a passenger ferry capsized and sank, leading to a significant loss of life and numerous injuries. As of Monday, 19 individuals remain hospitalized, according to the Turkish Cypriot health ministry.
The ferry, which was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, departed from the new port of Kyrenia around 12:10 PM, bound for the Turkish port of Tasucu. Shortly after its departure, the vessel encountered difficulties and capsized, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
The health ministry reported that of the 19 people currently receiving medical treatment, 10 are at Dr. Burhan Nalbantoglu Hospital in northern Nicosia, while four are being treated at the emergency hospital in the same city. Additionally, four patients are at the Near East University Hospital, located between Nicosia and Kyrenia, and one individual is receiving care at Dr. Akcicek Hospital in Kyrenia.
In total, it is believed that 241 people were successfully rescued and brought ashore following the incident. However, the tragedy has claimed the lives of eight individuals, and there are still approximately 18 people unaccounted for, raising concerns about their fate.
In the wake of the accident, authorities have taken swift action. Arrest warrants have been issued for 16 individuals, including the ferry's captain, seven crew members, and a shareholder of Filo Denizcilik, the company operating the ferry service. Legal proceedings against those accused are currently underway at the Kyrenia district court, located near the port.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting discussions about maritime safety and the regulations governing ferry operations in the region.
