Wells, a student-athlete who played American football at Southwest Mississippi Community College, was reported missing by his mother, Christine Wonsley, after he failed to return home with friends from their outing. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has stated that they do not suspect foul play but are actively soliciting information from the public to piece together the events leading up to his death.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who has been retained by the Wells family, has raised concerns about inconsistencies in witness statements regarding Wells' whereabouts during the trip.
