North Korea will step up the tactical counterattack capabilities in one of the sectors of the demilitarized zone (DMZ) along the border with South Korea, Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted Kim Yo-Jong, head of a department of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, as saying in a statement. "Instructions were issued to the border defense units on countermeasures. We decided to take measures to increase the tactical means of counterattack in the demilitarized zone area under the responsibility of the 21st Infantry Division of the 3rd Corps of the South Korean army, where provocative actions have been frequently carried out recently," the KCNA quoted her as saying. Kim Yo-Jong also warned that if fire is opened on North Korean military personnel engaged in the construction of long-term barriers in the DMZ area, border units will deliver an "immediate and merciless retaliatory strike. If even a single bullet lands on our territory, they must be prepared for a lot." Kim Yo-Jong rejected Seoul’s claims that North Korea was involved in a September 21 mine explosion in the demilitarized zone, which injured three South Korean troops. According to her, North Korean military personnel "have never crossed the border," and the statements by the South Korean military about such incidents are an attempt to hold Pyongyang responsible for the escalation of the situation.
