Oil prices experienced a significant increase on Monday as concerns about the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz continue to mount. Brent Crude Futures rose by over $2, reaching $84.64 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures climbed 3.1 percent to $80.63 per barrel. This surge in oil prices follows a previous decline last week, as the Iranian government issued demands to the United States, including the cessation of military threats and sanctions, as well as compensation, in order to facilitate the reopening of the vital waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial passage for global oil transport, with a significant percentage of the world's oil supply traversing this narrow channel. The ongoing tensions in the region have led to a pessimistic outlook regarding its reopening, prompting a rise in oil prices as traders react to the uncertainty.

SEB Research analysts noted that despite the strait being effectively closed, oil prices are currently trading between $80 and $85 per barrel, reflecting a cautious optimism for a potential resolution in the near future. This increase in oil prices has also positively impacted oil and gas stocks in US markets. Major companies such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Shell, and ConocoPhillips saw their stock prices rise, with ExxonMobil gaining 2.9 percent, Chevron 3.1 percent, BP 2.1 percent, Shell 1.2 percent, and ConocoPhillips 2.7 percent.

In the United States, consumers had recently enjoyed a slight reprieve at the gas pump, with petrol prices falling nine cents over the past week. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the average price for a gallon of petrol is now $4.00, down from $4.09 the previous week. However, experts warn that this trend may not last. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, cautioned that if the closure of the Strait of Hormuz persists, fuel prices could rise again, potentially reaching record highs for this time of year.

De Haan advised consumers to monitor developments regarding the strait closely, noting that while they may currently enjoy lower prices, the situation could change rapidly if negotiations do not progress favorably.

As the market reacts to these developments, the focus remains on the geopolitical landscape surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the implications for global oil supply and pricing. The situation continues to evolve, with traders and analysts alike keeping a close watch on any potential agreements or escalations that could impact the flow of oil through this critical maritime route.
