**Open-Air Cinema Brings German Films to Nicosia's Goethe-Institut Garden**
Nicosia, Cyprus – The Goethe-Institut in Nicosia is set to host its seventh annual open-air film series, Sommerkino: Between Waves, from July 6 to July 10. This summer, the institute will transform its garden into a cinematic venue, showcasing a selection of German films that explore the theme of water.
The event will feature a cozy atmosphere with lounge chairs and a large screen, all set against the picturesque backdrop of the Ledra Palace Hotel. Each film presented during the five-day series promises to take viewers on a unique journey, highlighting various narratives and themes associated with water.
The film series will kick off on July 6 with **22 Lengths**, directed by Mia Maariel Meyer. This film, based on Caroline Wahl’s debut novel, tells the poignant story of two sisters who navigate the complexities of their lives while cherishing the quiet beauty of their bond.
The following night, July 7, audiences will be treated to **Skin Deep** by Alex Schaad. This film follows a young couple, portrayed by acclaimed actors Mala Emde and Jonas Dassler, as they escape to a remote island in hopes of resolving their relationship issues. The island serves as a transformative space, where the couple can literally reinvent themselves.
On July 8, the series continues with **Beyond the Blue Border**, a film adaptation of Dorit Linke’s novel. Directed by Sarah Neumann, the film presents a gripping narrative of two characters, Hanna and Andreas, who undertake a perilous 50-kilometer swim across the Baltic Sea to cross the border from East to West Germany. The story also delves into the lives of three 15-year-olds, each grappling with the realities of life in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in different ways: one protests against the regime, another uses her talents to serve the state, and the third is fortunate enough to gain permission to leave.
**Alaska**, directed by Max Gleschinski, will be screened on July 9. The film follows the solitary journey of Kerstin, who paddles aimlessly across the Mecklenburg Lake District in her kayak. Her introspective voyage takes a turn when she encounters Alima, the first person to engage her with meaningful questions, breaking the monotony of her isolation.
The film series will conclude on July 10 with **Afire**, directed by the award-winning Christian Petzold. Set in a holiday home by the Baltic Sea, this film brings together four young individuals during a summer getaway. It explores themes of self-reflection and interpersonal understanding, all while addressing the pressing issues surrounding the climate crisis.
All screenings are scheduled to begin at 8 PM and will be presented in German with English subtitles. Admission is free, making this event accessible to a wide audience interested in experiencing contemporary German cinema.
