**Pakistan Summons US Diplomat Over Controversial Kashmir Remarks**
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry has summoned the top US diplomat in Islamabad following remarks made by Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador to India, regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir. Gor, who also serves as the US Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” during a visit to the region on Wednesday.
Gor's comments were made in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, after a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He praised the beauty of the region, stating, “It is an incredibly beautiful place.” However, these remarks have sparked significant backlash from Pakistan, which claims the territory as disputed.
In response to Gor's statements, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry summoned Natalie Baker, the Charge d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Islamabad, to express their discontent. The ministry issued a statement condemning Gor's remarks as “factually incorrect” and “irresponsible,” emphasizing that Jammu and Kashmir is recognized internationally as a disputed territory. The statement reiterated that the region's status remains unresolved and is subject to the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
The Kashmir region has been a point of contention between India and Pakistan since both countries gained independence from British rule in 1947. The two nuclear-armed neighbors have a long history of conflict over the territory, which has seen military skirmishes and heightened tensions, particularly in recent years. In 2022, the situation escalated when a terror attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam resulted in 26 fatalities, with India attributing the attack to Pakistan-backed groups.
Gor's comments have raised eyebrows, especially given the historical context of US-Pakistan relations. Despite the tensions, Gor's remarks come against the backdrop of a complex relationship between the Trump administration and Pakistani military leadership. Former President Donald Trump has previously claimed to have intervened to de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan, a claim that New Delhi has dismissed. Nevertheless, Islamabad acknowledged Trump's role in mitigating the conflict and even recommended him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Following Pakistan's protest, Indian authorities took action by using bulldozers to remove temporary structures and barricades outside the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. This move appears to be a retaliatory measure after Pakistan conducted a similar operation outside the Indian mission in Islamabad earlier in the week.
